Super Gold on track for Three Rings Trophy
Michael Lee
Friday, January 08, 2010

The small field of a 1400m race and expected slow pace that comes with the territory, were always going to be banana skins for short-priced favourite Noble Manor – and slip he did when second elect Super Gold lowered his colours on Friday. With the field of the $125,000 Open Class race reduced to six following the withdrawal of stablemate Waikato, last-start winner Noble Manor (Joao Moreira) drifted to the rear on settling, spotting noted on-pace runner Super Gold (Alan Ng) about four lengths. While Moreira was seen restraining Noble Manor, Ng let Super Gold ($37) amble along at a moderate tempo with London Express (John Sundradas) and Fantastic Owners (Mark Gallagher) in close attendance.

The order changed little to the home turn, where Noble Manor, called upon by his rider swung out wide to stake his bid. Super Gold on the rails kept pulling plenty but looked like he would have to settle for second when Noble Manor levelled up with 200m to go. Under Moreira’s energetic riding, Noble Manor however rolled in, bumping with Super Gold, who was finding a second wind at the same time. With the momentum swinging in his favour, Super Gold fought back to regain the lead, which he maintained to the line to score by half-a-length from Noble Manor. After momentarily looking a threat, Fantastic Owners wound up third another 2 ¼ lengths away. The winning time was 1min 22.74secs. “He was a little keen at the start but Alan knows him very well and knows how to get him to settle,” said Chua. “He then enjoyed a soft lead, and in a small field like tonight’s, he just kept going all the way, though he did cop a bit of bumping in the closing stages. “I will probably set him for the Three Rings Trophy on January 29 now. Then I’ll be looking at the Derby further down the road.” The $200,000 Group 3 Three Rings Trophy (1400m) is the first Group race to be staged this year while the Group 1 Singapore Derby (2000m) will be run on July 11. Ng said he had always had a huge opinion of the Golden Snake four-year-old whom he partnered to victory in last year’s Group 3 Committee’s Prize (1600m), and was quietly confident of a good showing on Friday despite the presence of Noble Manor. “The small field helped. We had no trouble settling in the lead and dictate our own terms, though he can pull a little in his races,” said Ng.

“I could feel Moreira’s horse finishing strongly on the outside, but once he came up behind us, my horse fought back. I think the bump actually gave him another burst.”

Ng is enjoying a sterling start to the new year having now chalked up three wins to temporarily share the lead on the Singapore jockey’s premiership with Fran Berry, Soo Khoon Beng and Danny Beasley, who was victorious a race later with the very exciting Tumbulgum.

“Things are going well for me,” said the former champion apprentice jockey. “Let’s hope the good run continues.”

Golden Snake Newsflash

Hissing Sid a 5 year old son of Golden Snake was gallant in diving home for 3rd in the Group 3 Easter Cup over 2000m today at Caulfield. He was blocked for a run in the home strait and when a gap opened up he just ran out of ground and time as he picked himself up and got into stride , it was just too late to pick the winner up . A most impressive run second up from a spell which shows that the gelding is just starting to hit his straps this time in.

Desert King Newsflash

Desert King finished off the month of August in Japan with two winners on two consecutive days. Super Afilado won well for connections over 1400m and then Al Mahdi backed up with a nice win again over 1400m the following day. Desert King also had a placegetter the consistent filly French Desert who ran 3rd the same day that Al Mahdi paraded in the winners circle . What a consistent source of winners!
